Materialisation in Art and Design (MAD)

An examination of program that attempted to help art students (re)establish a relationship with “material” on both a personal and a societal level.

Materialisation in Art & Design (MAD), the temporary master's program at the Sandberg Instituut, investigated the conventional hierarchy in art and design education in which concept often takes precedence over material or the making of the work. In an effort to (re)establish a relationship with “material” on both a personal and a societal level, the program placed emphasis on the material expressions of works. This book reflects on the experiences generated through the lens of MAD. With contributions from the program directors, MAD alumni, and experts in the field, it examines the position of the workshop within the art academy in which students become acquainted with the latest technologies and materials, learn new craft skills or improve those they already have. By implication, this book highlights the need for collective creative output in an increasingly individualized society by questioning the traditional frameworks of art and design education.
