Hello, Dearest Readers,
It has been a while since you received one of our newsletters, I know. By all standards it has been way too long, but we are back, and we have news. While we were away from your mailboxes, we explored the wonderful worlds of art, design, architecture and urban planning.
Did we have fun? Yes.
Did we want to bring you the best books we could find? You know we did.
Well, did we? Yes.
Because we are the bookstore that we are, we looked for titles new and old that would surprise you, challenge many and interest most. Here are a few titles you might like:
Art, Design, Architecture, and Urban Planning
Literary Fiction, Translated Works & Nonfiction
Of course, we keep updating our literary fiction, translated works and nonfiction tables and shelves. Two great books I just finished reading breathlessly:
(although this hardcover. 650-page baby is a bit cumbersome, it will keep you turning pages to the last one. Think British Bonfire of the Vanities with a bit of Balzac and Dickens sprinkled on.)
Irish Authors
Recently, our heart has beaten faster for Irish authors. Ireland has long been a hotbed of great literature but recently, there has been a blooming of wonderful works, notably by Donal Ryan, among others:
(if you can get past the AWFUL cover.)
And the greatest of all:
Long Island by Colm Tóibín, the sequel to Brooklyn that you might want to snatch up at the same time.
On a lighter note, THE big summer read in my opinion has to be:
A coming-of-age story with insane wit, it offers contemporary and surprisingly deep insights into the dynamics of power.
In-Store & Local Experience
Other than that, we changed the layout of the store to make room for new books. You will like it, I am sure. Duluth Avenue has been in pedestrian mode for a few seeks now and will stay that way until early November, I am told. There is now a pétanque area in front of the bookstore and musicians on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
We love our corner of the world and our neighbors are the best, full of great ideas and good humour. Make sure you visit them when you come over.
